Wednesday 02052025 - Still Discovering
This week I tried something new. The library donated a bunch of books to the art center. Looking at them, I couldn’t figure out why they were given away. They’re fairly new, good condition, and they look interesting! Were they unpopular? I can’t help but wonder if the new administration had something to do with it? I couldn’t help noticing it was primarily books concerning people of color. But am I looking for problems where there aren’t any? But I’m rambling.
When collaging, I usually use fashion magazines. If I see a word or phrase I like, I’ll use it, but since it’s fashion, they’re image focused. I’ve never used an actual book for my sole material source. I’ve always liked William S. Burroughs' work, so trying out the cut and paste method felt overdue and exciting.
What caught me off guard was how incredibly relaxing it was. I fell into a flow, scanning pages, only barely taking in the story but still finding phrases that came together as if they always belonged together. It felt like my subconscious was picking the words for me. I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m definitely making art like this. I have so many ideas.
